Repentigny debuts the first all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E police car in Quebec

Autopatrouille électrique de Repentigny

The City of Repentigny showed off what they claim to be the first all-electric patrol car in Quebec capable of responding to emergency calls, a Ford Mustang Mach-E.

In February, the City of Repentigny announced that it would retrofit a Ford Mustang Mach-E to create their municipality’s first EV patrol car.

The EV patrol car was introduced at annual meetings of the Union of Municipalities of Quebec (UMQ) on May 13. Before it starts patrolling the Montreal suburb, the Mach-E will be on a bit of tour, being displayed this weekend at the Quebec City Electric Vehicle Show, then the New York City Fleet Show, May 25-26. It will then be introduced at a gathering of Quebec police forces.

The Mach-E will be put into service on June 6 in the streets of Repentigny and Charlemagne. This test phase, which will extend for six months, will test the Mach-E in a real policing environment.

Ford launched its first modern electric car, the Mustang Mach-E SUV, just last year, and it’s already a hit. It’s even matching sales of the iconic Mustang sports car — at least during some months.

In November, almost half of the Mustangs Ford sold to US customers were of the battery-powered variety, the company said Thursday. All told, the Blue Oval shipped out 6,797 Mustangs, 3,088 of which were the Mach-E SUV.

It was a particularly strong month for the Mach-E, with sales rising more than 8% over October’s figures. It was a weaker month for the regular Mustang, which notched 8,000 sales back in April. During one month this year, June, a few hundred more people bought Mach-E SUVs than gas-fueled Mustangs.

Tesla amongst least reliable vehicles sold in United States

Joseph White / Reuters »

Consumer Reports, a nonprofit organization that evaluates products and services, said Tesla, the world’s most valuable automaker, ranked 27th out of 28 brands, just ahead of Ford Motor Co’s Lincoln brand.

Among electric SUVs, Fisher said Ford Motor Co‘s Mustang Mach-E “is the only one with above-average reliability.”

Consumer Reports recommends the Tesla Model 3 sedan and rates its reliability as “average.” But Fisher said the rest of Tesla’s vehicles are below average.

The popular Model Y SUV, Tesla’s best-selling vehicle, has problems with poorly fitting body panels, leaks and issues with its climate control, Fisher said.

Electric vehicles, with far fewer moving parts, should be more reliable than gas-powered vehicles, Fisher said. But electric SUVs tend to be higher-priced luxury vehicles at present, and those have all the latest technology that can cause trouble, he said.

“The powertrains aren’t the problem,” Fisher said. Instead, the electric SUVs often are equipped with electric door handles, electric-activated climate control vents and other features. “By having all of these new technologies saddled into these early adopter-mobiles, there are more problems associated with them.”

Fisher said electric vehicles are likely to be more reliable than gas-powered ones as manufacturers work the bugs out of their features.
