Ford began increasing production of the Mustang Mach-E this past week. Changes at the Cuautitlán Assembly Plant in Izcalli, Mexico will allow Ford to nearly double its hourly production and bring its annual manufacturing run rate to a targeted 210,000 units by year’s end.
Ford has started delivering the E-Transit van, the all-electric version of the best-selling van in the United States, to Penske Truck Leasing and National Grid. Both have taken delivery of preproduction units of the E-Transit van with plans to use early learnings that will help deployment into their operations when the EV arrives to market in 2022.
Operating as part of company fleets, these E-Transit pilot vans will give companies the opportunity to experience how battery-powered vehicles coupled with Ford Pro Intelligence and Ford Pro Charging solutions can help improve efficiencies.
Participating companies will deploy vehicles in specific applications to evaluate performance, identify the best route types, and explore charging solutions.
Ford‘s bet on electrification is paying off with more orders than the automaker can handle. Global demand for the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover is expected to be about 200,000 units a year, Ford CEO Jim Farley told investors on a call to report third-quarter earnings. Ford can’t get enough batteries to keep up and is hoping its partners in China can help out.
Production of the Ford e-Transit electric commercial van starts in a few weeks and it is already sold out, Farley says.
And the biggie, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning electric fullsize pickup truck, already has 160,000 reservations. Ford is making final preparations for its launch in Dearborn, but the facility can only make about 80,000 of them a year. Ford has announced plans for a campus in Stanton, Tennessee, with a battery production plant and a vehicle assembly plant that will build next-generation electric F-Series trucks.
Ford is discontinuing the Powerstroke diesel in the bestselling vehicle in North America, the F-150 in 2022. This speaks volumes about the future of diesel prospects in passenger vehicles, and is the right thing to do for the environment and people’s health.
