Independent motoring journalist Tom Voelk drives a front-wheel drive Toyota bZ4X Limited edition and finds it to be a solid performer with an excellent driving dynamic.
The Toyota bZ4X is available in front and all-wheel drive. It would be optimistic to believe this Toyota would achieve its official range of 400 km (252 mi). And it’s mediocre charging speed mean those who regularly travel long distances should probably consider other EVs.
SEA Electric has made the next step in its journey to electrify the world’s commercial vehicle fleet, by signing a significant Memorandum of Understanding with MEVCO (Mining Electric Vehicle Company), a leading systems integrator focused exclusively on electric light commercial vehicles within the mining industry.
The partnership will mean 8,500 Toyota Hilux and Landcruisers will be converted to all-electric for the mining industry, over the next five years.
Toyota offers only one all-electric vehicle, globally, the bZ4X, and then only in very limited numbers. Toyota has staked out a pretty staunch “hybrids-only” approach to its vehicle lineup, and it’s pretty safe to say that the Japanese carmaker has not been favourably disposed to converting to an all-electric lineup. This has opened the door for others.
Toyota’s luxury vehicle division Lexus finally has an electric coming. But all we are given are photos. No word on specs, except that the Lexus RZ 450e will be based on the same platform as awkwardly named Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra.

Toyota bZ4x
The Toyota bZ4X shares the same platform with the Subaru Solterra.
Prices will range up to £51,550 (CDN$88,000 / USD$68,300) depending on options and trim levels. Deliveries will begin in early 2022.
The bZ4X SUV will start from £41,950 with four specification levels: Pure, Motion, Vision and a limited Premiere Edition. A new electric four-wheel drive system called X-mode has been introduced for the model and Toyota says it gives the bZ4X “class-leading off-road driving capability”.
Entry-level Pure models are front-wheel drive only and are equipped with 18in alloy wheels, an 8.0in touchscreen multimedia system and a 7.0in digital driver’s display as standard. Other basic features include a reversing camera, keyless entry and climate control with a remote operation function.
Drivers can choose front- or four-wheel drive on the next-step Motion specification, which starts from £45,750 and gains a rear spoiler and rear privacy glass. Inside, the model is fitted with heated front seats, ambient lighting and a wireless phone-charging tray.

Lexus RZ
That Lexus EV the company was talking about last year? It’s coming, it has a name, and it’s (unsurprisingly) based on the Toyota bZ4X electric crossover, co-developed with Subaru’s Solterra. And given the close relationship with Toyota platforms and Lexus models, and the economy of scale benefits of sharing development costs with a partner like Subaru, this all makes a lot of sense. But will the resulting Lexus RZ battery-electric SUV make sense as a product?

Toyota bZ4X
Toyota today announced the all-electric bZ4X, which they estimate will have a “range of up to 400 km per charge” for the front wheel drive model, will be in some Canadian markets in mid-2022.
The bZ4X will be available with AWD which Toyota is promoting as off-road capable.
The oddly named bZ4X, which was introduced in October, is Toyotas first battery electric vehicle (BEV) to be introduced in North America. (bZ is short for Beyond Zero). And while other manufactures are stepping up their fight to help save the climate, Toyota has only committed to being carbon neutral in another 30 years, by 2050.
Built on the BEV-dedicated e-TNGA platform, the Toyota bZ4X shares the same underbelly as the Subaru Solterra which was introduced last week.
Toyota did not announce any pricing for its first BEV to hit the North American market.
It should be noted that ExxonMobile, Cheveron, and Toyota are the three largest corporations lobbying against Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV).

Toyota bZ4X
The Toyota bZ4x crossover, Toyota’s first battery electric vehicle (BEV), is revealed and heading for showrooms early next year.
Two variants will be offered: the front-driven entry car with a single motor producing 201bhp and 195lb ft cracks the 0-62mph sprint in 8.4 seconds, while the twin-motor range-topper – which uses four-wheel drive technology developed by Subaru – boosts power to 214bhp, torque to 248bhp and cuts the 0-62mph time to 7.7 seconds.
Power comes from a 71.4kWh battery pack which promises a WLTP range of more than 280 miles, with an “efficient and effective” heating system ensuring only a ‘modest’ drop in range in sub-zero temperatures. It can be charged at speeds of up to 150kW, meaning an 80% top-up can be achieved in around 30 minutes.
The SUV’s range is optimised courtesy of an on-board solar charging system that helps to ensure colder weather has minimal impact on usability – a noted drawback of conventional battery tech.
