The new medium-size Fiat e-Scudo electric van

Fiat e-Scudo

DrivingElectric »

The Fiat Scudo name has been revived for a new medium-sized van, available to order from December 2021 and priced from £35,720 (CDN$61,000 / USD$47,300) before VAT in fully electric ‘e-Scudo’ form. If it looks familiar, that’s because it’s a near-identical sister model to the Citroen e-Dispatch, Peugeot e-Expert, Toyota Proace Electric and Vauxhall Vivaro-e – joint winners of DrivingElectric’s 2022 Best Medium Electric Van award.

As it shares drivetrain technology with those models, the e-Scudo gets a 134bhp electric motor and a choice of 50 or 75kWh batteries, for driving ranges of 143 and 205 miles respectively, along with 100kW rapid-charging capability for swift battery top-ups on the go.

Two main versions of the e-Scudo are being offered at launch: the short-wheelbase 50kWh battery model comes in the Tecnico trim and has an on-the-road-price of £35,720 before VAT, while the long-wheelbase 75kWh battery model comes in Business specification and is priced at £43,050 on the road, excluding VAT.

The Citroën, Fiat, Peugeot, Toyota, and Vauxhall electric vans share the same Stellantis mid-van platform and technology, and are equally responsible for raising the bar in their class.

CEO Linda Jackson says Peugeot will switch all European models onto EV platforms by 2030

Automotive News »

There will continue to be internal-combustion based models in Peugeot’s lineup for international buyers, Jackson added.

“As we move on to the new [Stellantis] platforms, STLA Small, Medium, Large, by 2030 in Europe all of our models will be electric,” Jackson told Automotive News Europe. “But I still have to make sure I maintain internal-combustion offerings for my international customers.”

Peugeot’s move would come five years ahead of the EU’s proposal to mandate only zero-emissions vehicles in 2035. A number of automakers have already announced they will be all-electric in Europe well ahead of that date.

Mini Electric

Admittedly, a small platform means less space for batteries and so the range of the following cars will never match the potential of larger alternatives. But a small battery also means a lower asking price, and if we’re talking about urban runabouts that do only the occasional longer journey, it’s arguable just how many owners would need more than, say, 180 miles of driving range.

Nearly one in five vehicles sold in the EU in Q3 2021 was electrified

Nick Carey, Reuters »

Battery electric and plug-in hybrid model sales across the European Union made up just under 19% of all sales.

Battery electric vehicle sales jumped nearly 57% to more than 212,000 units, while plug-in hybrid models rose nearly 43% to more than 197,000 units.

But it compares with a 35% drop in sales for petrol cars – which still are the biggest sellers and account for nearly 40% of overall sales – and a more than 50% drop for diesel cars during the quarter.

The head of Stellantis NV’s Peugeot brand said on Tuesday that during the first eight months of 2021 nearly 20% of the vehicles it sold in Europe were electrified.

Speaking at the Reuters Events Automotive Summit, Peugeot CEO Linda Jackson said that almost one fifth of sales in Europe were either fully electric or plug-in hybrids.
