Repentigny debuts the first all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E police car in Quebec

The City of Repentigny showed off what they claim to be the first all-electric patrol car in Quebec capable of responding to emergency calls, a Ford Mustang Mach-E.

In February, the City of Repentigny announced that it would retrofit a Ford Mustang Mach-E to create their municipality’s first EV patrol car.

The EV patrol car was introduced at annual meetings of the Union of Municipalities of Quebec (UMQ) on May 13. Before it starts patrolling the Montreal suburb, the Mach-E will be on a bit of tour, being displayed this weekend at the Quebec City Electric Vehicle Show, then the New York City Fleet Show, May 25-26. It will then be introduced at a gathering of Quebec police forces.

The Mach-E will be put into service on June 6 in the streets of Repentigny and Charlemagne. This test phase, which will extend for six months, will test the Mach-E in a real policing environment.

Demand for the electric 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning has been so extreme that the automaker poured an extra $250 million into its factory to increase production. Any more than that, though, it seems Ford isn’t yet prepared for—otherwise, it might’ve kept reservations for the Lightning open, rather than close them like it did today.

“As we prepare to make history together, we’ve closed reservations so we can start accepting orders,” reads a passage on the Lightning’s Ford product page. An email from a Ford dealer to an F150Gen14 user reveals the Blue Oval was already planning to close its reservation book on this date, and that Ford will begin making headway on its order bank in January. Come spring 2022, the truck will finally enter production.

Ford apparently has more reservations than it has production capacity for the 2022 model year, as the dealer’s email states “not all reservation holders will receive an invitation to place an order for 22MY.” This becomes even more apparent when you consider Ford CEO Jim Farley told Automotive News that reservation totals were nearing 200,000.

Ford aims to be world’s #2 EV maker within two years, with annual production capacity of nearly 600,000

The automaker’s optimism stems from increasing demand for its next new EV, the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup, with retail reservations approaching 200,000, Lisa Drake, chief operating officer of Ford North America, said.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that Ford likely would be vying with Stellantis for third place in the EV race by 2025, behind Tesla and the Volkswagen Group, based on production forecast data provided by AutoForecast Solutions.

Speaking at an investor conference, Drake said Ford is working to vertically integrate more EV components, including power electronics and e-drives, at existing facilities that build parts for combustion vehicles – a modern take on founder Henry Ford’s pioneering work in building many of his own components.

Ford launched its first modern electric car, the Mustang Mach-E SUV, just last year, and it’s already a hit. It’s even matching sales of the iconic Mustang sports car — at least during some months.

In November, almost half of the Mustangs Ford sold to US customers were of the battery-powered variety, the company said Thursday. All told, the Blue Oval shipped out 6,797 Mustangs, 3,088 of which were the Mach-E SUV.

It was a particularly strong month for the Mach-E, with sales rising more than 8% over October’s figures. It was a weaker month for the regular Mustang, which notched 8,000 sales back in April. During one month this year, June, a few hundred more people bought Mach-E SUVs than gas-fueled Mustangs.
