EV startups Lucid and Rivian deliver first EVs to customers

Lucid Air

Wall Street Journal »

Rivian Automotive and Lucid Group Inc., two electric-car startups looking to emulate Tesla Inc.’s success, are making their marketplace debuts, shipping their first models to customers and planning to expand production.

Lucid, a California-based upstart that went public in July through a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company, began building its first all-electric Air sedans in Arizona in September and started delivering them to customers Saturday.

The company, which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign-wealth fund, is looking to target the high-end market for luxury electric cars—a niche long dominated by Tesla—with the Air, a model that starts at $77,400. The first versions delivered over the weekend cost around $169,000.

Volkswagen is investing in technology firms in the field of energy transformation

Reuters »

The carmaker, which has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, said on Wednesday it had entered a strategic partnership with EIT InnoEnergy and will become a shareholder in the EU-backed venture.

The move is in line with other steps by Volkswagen, which in September unveiled plans to set up its own 300 million euro ($348 million) venture capital fund to invest in decarbonisation projects and start-ups in the field.

“The idea is simply … to use InnoEnergy as an additional way to find interesting enterprises and support them in scaling up their business models,” said Jens Wiese, Volkswagen’s head of group M&A, investment advisory and partnerships.

BMW’s EV sales almost double last year’s levels, despite chip shortage

Reuters »

BMW’s deliveries fell 12.2% in the third quarter but revenues were still up by 4.5%. EVs in particular saw a significant boost, with sales in the nine months to September almost double last year’s levels at just under 232,000 vehicles.

“A better product mix and good price setting of new vehicles alongside a stable pricing trend of used vehicles strengthened the financial performance of the business,” a company statement said.

Still, Peter said the lack of chips was “by no means a blessing” due to the tens of thousands of cars the company could have sold but could not produce.

The finance chief said earlier this year the company expected to deliver up to 90,000 fewer cars in 2021 because of a lack of chips.

The Ora Cat is the cheapest EV in the UK

Jonny Smith »

This new £22k EV could be Britain’s (Europe’s?) cheapest electric car. This is the new affordable EV that you’ve probably never heard of, unless you live in China. New Chinese brand Ora exclusively make ground-up EVs and they are part of the huge GWM (Great Wall Motors) group. Jonny’s walk-around was as detailed as we could make without driving the Cat.

The stand out specs here are that it will start at £25k without any government incentive discount, it will have a range of 209 miles to 261 miles (depending on whether you choose the 48kWh or 63kWh battery pack) and it will be able to CCS rapid charge up to 80Kw as standard. There’s also 3-phase 11kW as standand, heated massage seats as standard and wireless Apple Carplay and Android thingy.
