Hyundai’s all-new Ioniq 5 isn’t the first ‘affordable’ EV launched by a mainstream brand and it’s not even Hyundai’s first EV. However, it is one of the most exciting and is the best EV on sale at this price point.
Underpinning the Ioniq 5 is the same Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) as the Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60. It is the first in a long line of all-electric models that Hyundai is developing and borrows its name from the Ioniq liftback that was introduced a few years ago and sold as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and an EV. Don’t let the familiar name fool you, though; the Ioniq 5 is nothing like the original Ioniq, nor is it like any other electric vehicle on sale.

Hyundai Nexo
Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung has made a number of bold moves since he took the company’s reins late last year. He’s put more money into electric vehicles and orchestrated a deeper shift into the world of robotics. But another important part of his effort to transform the company from conventional carmaker to mobility giant involves embracing hydrogen-based technology. And on that front, the jury’s still out.
The experience of Song Young-jin shows just how tough it will be for Hyundai to succeed in a world increasingly embracing electric-battery-powered motors. The 38-year-old sales manager in Euiwang city bought a Hyundai Nexo, whose hydrogen-fuel-cell engine emits only water vapor, in March 2020. Wooed by Hyundai’s advertising, he felt a hydrogen car would be good for long commutes and better for the environment.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the best new cars of the year, and one of the best family cars on sale today – EV or otherwise. But it does pose a slightly awkward question: does it render its sibling, the Kona, slightly redundant?

Just half a year after its launch in the German market, Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 has been named 2022 ‘German Car of the Year’ (GCOTY). In the final round of the notable award, the fully-electric midsize CUV prevailed over its world-class competitors.
At the GCOTY awards, the top car model launches of the year compete against one another in five categories: “Compact”, “Premium”, “Luxury”, “New Energy”, and “Performance”. An internationally networked jury of 20 automotive journalists tests and evaluates each product in terms of product features, relevance, and future viability. As the class winner in the “New Energy” category, IONIQ 5 automatically took place – and consequently won – in the final round.
