Recycled cathodes make better lithium batteries

Wang and his colleagues tested the recycled cathode powder in a number of cell types: coin, single-layer pouch, 1 Ah, and 11 Ah. They compared the performance of the different types to similar cells made with “fresh” cathode powder.

Cells using recycled cathodes were then put through an array of tests, where they performed almost identically to cells using fresh cathode materials. There was only one notable exception: The cells using recycled cathode materials lasted up to 53 percent longer.

The team tested batteries with recycled NMC111 cathodes, the most common flavor of cathode containing a third each of nickel, manganese, and cobalt. The cathodes were made using a patented recycling technique that Battery Resources, a startup Wang co-founded, is now commercializing. The recycled material showed a more porous microscopic structure that is better for lithium ions to slip in and out of. The result: batteries with an energy density similar to those made with commercial cathodes, but which also showed up to 53% longer cycle life.

While the recycled batteries weren’t tested in cars, tests were done at industrially relevant scales. The researchers made 11 Ampere-hour industry-standard pouch cells loaded with materials at the same density as EV batteries. Engineers at A123 Systems did most of the testing, Wang says, using a protocol devised by the USABC to meet commercial viability goals for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. He says the results prove that recycled cathode materials are a viable alternative to pristine materials.

Samsung and Stellantis sign MOU to jointly produce EV batteries for the North American market

South Korean battery maker Samsung SDI Co Ltd and global automaker Stellantis NV have agreed to jointly produce electric vehicle (EV) batteries for the North American market, a person familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

Samsung SDI, an affiliate of South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), already has EV battery plants in South Korea, China and Hungary, which supply customers such as BMW and Ford Motor.

“The two companies (Samsung SDI and Stellantis) have struck a MOU (memorandum of understanding) to produce EV batteries for North America,” the person with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The source spoke of condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Tennessee approves $884M incentive package for Ford EV project

The Tennessee General Assembly on Wednesday signed off on $884 million in incentives for the $5.6 billion electric vehicle assembly, battery manufacturing and supplier campus Ford Motor Co. and its joint-venture partner, SK Innovation, plan to build in the state.

Two pieces of legislation tied to the project largely sailed through committee hearings and floor votes over the course of a three-day special session called by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee. Both bills — one establishing an 11-member regional authority to oversee the project site in west Tennessee and the other appropriating $500 million in direct grants plus additional funding for initiatives such as infrastructure improvements and workforce development — passed overwhelmingly in both chambers of the legislature after debate led to some minor modifications.
