Andrea and Zach review the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70 review, their new favourite EV SUV [Updated]

This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new Electrified Genesis GV70 compact SUV. The GV70 has a 77.4 kWh battery with 383 km / 283 miles of range. It has 429 horsepower, 516 lb-ft of torque and with boost mode you get a power bump to 483 horsepower and standard AWD.

The GV70 is available in one trim in Canada which comes fully loaded for CDN$84,150. In the US, two trim levels are offered, Advanced starting at USD$65,850, and Prestige at USD$72,650.

Hyundai announces Canadian pricing for the 2023 Ioniq 6 EV

Hyundai Auto Canada announced details and pricing for its much anticipated Ioniq 6 fully-electric sedan.

All trims sold across Canada starting this Spring, will come with a Long Range 77.4-kWh battery and customers will be able to select from either a rear motor only layout, or for all-wheel drive.

The Ioniq 6 Preferred RWD Long Range has a MSRP of CDN$54,999 and a Natural Resources Canada (NRC)-estimated range of 581 kilometres (361 miles).

Dual motor AWD models have a starting MSRP of CDN$57,999 and have up to 509 kilometres (316 miles) of range.

Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is showing that electric vehicles are at least as safe as conventional ones with total injury claims happen less frequently for electric vehicles.

EVs could cost less than dinosaur-juice powered cars by the end of this year (2023)

Jack Ewing of The New York Times, makes the case that increased competition, government incentives, and falling prices for lithium and other battery materials are making electric vehicles more affordable, and could soon be on a par with more internal combustion (ICE) cars. Perhaps even by the end of 2023.

The battery-powered version of GM’s Equinox crossover, for example, will start around $30,000 when it arrives this fall, the carmaker has said. That is $3,400 more than the least expensive gasoline-fueled Equinox. But factoring in government incentives, the electric Equinox should be cheaper. Like all electric vehicles, the car will need less maintenance, and the electricity to power it will cost less than the gasoline used by its combustion engine equivalent.

The article also makes the point that the EV will require less maintenance, and “the electricity to power it will cost less than the gasoline used by its combustion engine equivalent.”

Hyundai purchased a building in Manhattan to house offices and a showroom

What’s more, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the Nissan Ariya, both EVs, are also finalists for the overall 2023 World Car of the Year award. Interestingly the Nissan Ariya didn’t make the final cut for the EV of the Year 🤔. The Kia Niro is a contender for the overall award. The Kia Niro is available as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and a full-time EV.

2023 Genesis GV60 Performance AWD “is one of the very best electric vehicles currently on sale”

The Genesis GV60 shares its platform with the award winning Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. However it feels like a completely different car and Australia’s Carscoops claims it “is one of the very best electric vehicles currently on sale.”

Underpinning the GV60 is Hyundai’s Electric-Global Module Platform (E-GMP) which brings with it a flat floor and supports two powertrain configurations in Australia. Sitting at the base of the range is the GV60 AWD which features a 74 kW (99 hp) electric motor at the front axle and a 160 kW (214 hp) motor at the rear axle, resulting in a combined 234 kW (314 hp) and 605 Nm (446 lb-ft) of torque.

During the Christmas and New Year period, we had the chance to test and live with the flagship GV60 Performance AWD. This variant rocks a 180 kW (241 hp) motor at the front and a 180 kW (241 hp) motor at the rear, good for 360 kW (483 hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque in Boost Mode or 320 kW (429 hp) and 605 Nm (446 lb-ft) in every other driving mode.

Both GV60 models receive their juice from the same 77.4 kWh battery pack found in the floor. The standard AWD has a claimed WLTP range of 470 km (292 miles) while the Performance AWD has a WLTP range of 466 km (289 miles).
