India’s Tata Group is considering setting up a battery cell plant for electric vehicles (EV) in Spain or Britain, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters, as its carmaking unit seeks to boost supply chains in Europe.
The move is likely to mean a switch in platform tech, from the current D7 Premium Lightweight Architecture to Land Rover’s advanced new MLA Flex platform. MLA can support fully electric powertrains as well as internal combustion engines, and already underpins the firm’s new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models, with all-electric versions of those cars due from 2024.
There is no word if the Defender EV will make it to Canada or the U.S.

The Glasgow Declaration on Zero Emission Cars and Vans, announced at the COP26 climate summit, includes a commitment to “work towards all sales of new cars and vans being zero emission globally by 2040, and by no later than 2035 in leading markets”.
Chinese-owned Sweden-based Volvo has already committed to going fully electric by 2030.
Countries that did sign the declaration include » Austria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, Slovenia, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and Uruguay.
Major auto producing countries notably absent include » China, Germany, Japan, and the United States.
Canadian provinces of British Columbia, and Quebec also committed.
This new fifth-generation Range Rover will be available in 2022 with a choice of mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains and four, five or seven-seat interiors across standard and long wheelbase body designs. A pure-electric Range Rover – the first all-electric Land Rover – will join the line-up in 2024.
Every Land Rovers nameplate will be available with pure-electric propulsion by the end of the decade, helping Jaguar Land Rover achieve net zero carbon across its products, operations and supply chain by 2039.
A fleet of electrified Jaguar Land Rover vehicles – including Jaguar I-PACE – will deliver zero-emission luxury transport for world’s leaders and their teams at the COP26 summit starting in Glasgow in the next few days.

In February, Jaguar Land Rover set the goal of achieving zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, and net zero carbon emissions across our supply chain, products and operations by 2039.
