What’s more, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and the Nissan Ariya, both EVs, are also finalists for the overall 2023 World Car of the Year award. Interestingly the Nissan Ariya didn’t make the final cut for the EV of the Year 🤔. The Kia Niro is a contender for the overall award. The Kia Niro is available as a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and a full-time EV.

After 4 years of planning, husband and wife team Chris and Julie Ramsey, are about to embark on an epic 27,000 km (17,000 miles) adventure over 10-months, in an attempt to become the first people to drive from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole.
Julie and Chris will undertake the challenge in an all-electric Nissan Ariya, modified by Arctic Trucks.
Earlier this month, Chris said, “One of the things that underpins all the adventures we do is that we take a standard production EV and aim to make minimal changes to clearly demonstrate its real, everyday capabilities, regardless of where you are driving it. Our Nissan Ariya is no different as the vehicle’s drivetrain and battery has remained factory standard, demonstrating just how capable and versatile the production Ariya is. We’ve modified the suspension and widened the wheel arches so we can benefit from the stable platform and support of the 39-inch BF Goodrich tyres. I’m incredibly excited to get behind the wheel of what was already a brilliant vehicle, but now feels equipped to take on the ends of the earth in style!”
The Japanese firm, which was first to launch a mass market electric car (the Nissan Leaf) in 2010, plans to have a pilot solid-state battery production plant up and running by 2025; to have completed engineering on the initial technology by 2026; and to then ramp up towards mass production in 2028 with the first application in a car.
David Moss, Nissan’s senior vice-president for research and development in Europe, said: “We think we have something quite special and are in a group leading the technology. We want to get the cost down [compared with lithium ion batteries] by 50%, to double the energy density and to offer three times the charging speed.”
The Nissan Max-Out adopts a retro-futuristic design celebrating some of the automaker’s more notable past designs while also giving a hint at what’s to come as it moves forward with its $18 billion, five-year electrification strategy.
Fans of the classis sci-fi adventure, Tron, might recognize some of the design cues of the Max-Out, starting with the way the convertible uses lighting on the nose, tail and even the wheels and headrests.
The Pole to Pole EV expedition team and Nissan unveiled a modified Nissan Ariya all-electric SUV, which will undertake a 27,000 km (17,000 miles) adventure from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole starting in March.

During this amazing adventure the team and the Ariya will navigate breath-taking yet extreme terrains and environments, including ice fields, deep snow, steep mountain climbs and inhospitable desert dunes. Arctic Trucks, specialists in polar expedition vehicles, worked with Nissan design and engineering teams to prepare the Ariya for these tough conditions. Yet modifications to the car have been minimal, with no changes to the battery or powertrain.
The 2023 Nissan Ariya has great looks, excellent interior space, respectable driving chops, and more than adequate range for even the most hesitant EV adopters. It feels deliberate and not like something thrown together.
When it comes to electric vehicles, Nissan is well ahead of other Japanese auto manufactures. Honda and Toyota have a lot of catching up to do. Meanwhile, Nissan is sure to keep moving its technology forward. Well done Nissan.
Nissan announced it is partnering with British adventurer Chris Ramsey, to undertake the world’s-first all-electric driving adventure from the magnetic North Pole to the South Pole in a Nissan ARIYA e-4ORCE.

Starting in March 2023, the epic Pole to Pole expedition will see Chris Ramsey travel some 27,000 km (16,800 mi) from the Arctic through North and South America, before crossing to Antarctica. Ramsey will be the first person to drive from pole to pole in an electric vehicle.
With predicted temperatures ranging from -30⁰C to 30⁰C (-22⁰F to 86⁰F), the route will negotiate some of the world’s most extreme, brutal, and yet breath-taking scenery. From snow-covered glacial landscapes to treacherous mountain climbs and vast desert dunes.
