Motor Trend has a look at the 2023 Kia Niro » Bye Bye, Boring

2023 Kia Niro EV

Motor Trend »

Arriving for 2023, the second-generation Kia Niro should have more mental stickiness. Modeled after the 2019 “HabaNiro” concept—Get it? Like the pepper but mixed with “Niro?” Such fun!—the new Niro has a similar overall shape to its predecessor, but the details between the bumpers are toughened up with blockier forms and edgier flourishes.

Don’t just call the Niro interesting-looking “for a hybrid.” This is a genuinely compelling small crossover, with angular new headlights, a broad hood, and chunky sculpting around its wheel wells and lower body. There are clear parallels to the HabaNiro concept in the contrast-color panel slicing up each side of the body behind each rear door, and Kia also mined that show car for those V-shaped LED headlight accents and the vertical taillights that frame the rear hatch.

Kia introduces the second-generation Niro compact SUV with full-electric and hybrid powertrains

Kia Niro EV

The new, second-generation Kia Niro is official, introducing a bold new design inside and out for one of Europe’s most popular crossovers.

Ahead of a market launch next year – just six years after the arrival of the current car – the new Niro has been shown for the first time at the Seoul motor show, revealing how the Nissan Juke rival has been brought into line with Kia’s evolved design language.

Kia has confirmed that the new arrival, like the current car, will be offered with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure-electric powertrains, although the Mk2 e-Niro will remain separate from the firm’s line of ‘EV’-badged bespoke electric cars and will not use the E-GMP platform reserved for those models. An evolution of the current e-Niro’s single-motor, front-wheel-drive powertrain is expected, although the shorter-range car could be discontinued in light of higher demand for the 282-mile 64kWh battery option.

Hyundai and Kia unveil EV concepts

Just Auto »

Hyundai Motor Group has unveiled two new electric vehicle concepts at the AutoMobility LA show in Los Angeles this week, the Hyundai “Seven” and the Kia EV9, which offer an insight into the future product strategy of the South Korea automaker.

The two models are large, flagship SUV models based on Hyundai Motor Group’s purpose-built EV platform “Electric Global Modular Platform”, or E-GMP. They are understood to be close to being pre-production models due to be launched in 2023.

The Seven can accommodate seven passengers and both models offer a driving range of 482 km on a single charge. They both also feature the vehicle-to-load (V2L) system, which allows customers to charge external electric devices such as coffee machines and electric bicycles. The Seven features design elements taken from Hyundai’s Ioniq brand, such as Parametric Pixels high-resolution digital imaging.
