The Canadian federal government’s iZEV rebate program is getting another $73 million cash infusion

Mehanaz Yakub / Electric Autonomy Canada »

The federal government is continuing its efforts to aid and encourage more Canadians to switch over to electric vehicles by topping up, once again, the Incentive for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) rebate program.

The announcement was made this week as part of the government’s Economic and Fiscal update 2021 report, which reads that $73 million will be added to the program, to “allow Transport Canada to continue offering purchase incentives for zero-emission vehicles until the end of March 2022.”

Originally launched in 2019, the government’s initial investment of $300 million was used up in 20 months. Last year, another $287 million was budgeted into the program, but by the end of October 2021, only around $48 million was left.

The investment of an additional $73 million is now taking the total funding of the iZEV program to almost $660 million since 2019.

FedEx receives its first electric delivery vans from GM’s Brightdrop

Adele Peters / Fast Company »

By 2025, half of the new vans FedEx Express buys will be electric. By 2030, any new Fedex Express van purchase will be for an electric vehicle, and by 2040, every delivery vehicle across the company will be electric. It’s a critical move for the climate. But the shift is simultaneously helping make the typical delivery vehicle better in other ways.

Take the example of the company’s newest vehicle, from BrightDrop, GM’s recently launched electric delivery vehicle business. While some EV manufacturers “are taking their existing diesel architecture and just sort of cramming a battery into that,” says BrightDrop CEO Travis Katz, the new design is built from the ground up, meaning it’s possible to reimagine other features.

The ET5 draws heavily on the ET7 with a very familiar interior and interior design in a more compact form. In fact, most would be hard pressed to separate the two without taking out a tape measure. Nevertheless, Nio’s new entry-level EV is a sleek and modern looking car with clean lines and a drag coefficient as low as 0.24, depending on the model.

Speaking of dimensions, the ET5 measures 4,790mm (188.6 in.) long, 1,960mm (77.2 in.) wide and 1,499mm (59.0 in.) tall, while riding on a 2,888mm (113.7 in.) wheelbase. That means it has a slightly bigger footprint than Tesla’s Model 3 that’s 184.8 in. long, 72.8 in. wide and 56.4 in. tall with a 113.2 in. wheelbase.

Mercedes performance division AMG sees battery power as its future

Mercedes AMG EQS

The Detroit Bureau »

“Our battery-electric (product) range will be growing very soon,” Philipp Schiemer, the CEO of the AMG brand, said during a media drive of the AMG EQS. And, in subsequent conversations with TheDetroitBureau.com, he gave a clearer picture of what’s coming, including a high-performance sports car riding on a unique-to-AMG skateboard-style platform.

The AMG EQS underscores the potential advantages battery drive can deliver to the performance sector. Electric motors can deliver ungodly amounts of tire-spinning torque, usually hitting max output the moment they start spinning. And while today’s batteries are heavy, mounting them — along with motors — below the load floor actually yields a lower center of gravity than a vehicle running on a conventional, internal combustion engine.

Dialing up regen — where a BEV’s dual-mode brakes regenerate energy normally lost while braking or coasting — also permits “One-Pedal” driving. A driver simply lifts off the throttle to aggressively slow down, almost like downshifting a manual transmission several gears. It allows for a more nuanced use of power in corners, among other things.
