Prime Minister Trudeau proposes Canada and US harmonize EV incentives

AFP »

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday he has proposed harmonizing rebates with the United States for electric vehicles to avoid a trade conflict over Washington’s go-it-alone plan that risks gutting Canada’s auto sector.

His remarks followed threatened retaliatory tariffs on American goods and Ottawa’s suspension of parts of the landmark North American free trade agreement if Washington went ahead with electric vehicle tax credits for EVs made in US union shops.

“Canada and the United States have been making cars together for over 50 years now. Our supply chains are deeply integrated,” Trudeau told a news conference.

“That is why we are working very hard with the United States on getting them to understand that this proposed EV rebate for American-built cars only is not good obviously for Canada, but also not good for the United States,” he said.

Lancia brand to be revived with new EV models

Automotive News Europe »

Napolitano has presented a 10-year plan to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares to relaunch Lancia, based on three new models: the new Ypsilon in 2024, both hybrid and battery electric, and a compact crossover expected in 2026 followed by a compact hatchback in 2028, both full-electric models.

“Clearly volumes are important, but our targets are about profitability,” Napolitano said in an interview on Friday.

Lancia, which alongside Alfa Romeo and DS was grouped in the pool of Stellantis brands cooperating in the premium market, needed to continue on this high-end path, he added.

“We still need to work and need to look at a benchmark … which for us is Mercedes,” Napolitano said. “I don’t mean we want to fight against Mercedes, that would be naive, but that is an example of what we look at.”

While Alfa Romeo and DS are global brands, Lancia’s target is to move to Europe, initially targeting Germany and France, where electrification is moving faster, then adding countries including Spain, Belgium, Austria and the Nordics, he said.

US Administration’s plan to build 500,000 EV charging stations with universal standards

Electrify America

The Drive »

The Biden Administration intends to put electric vehicles on track for 50 percent market share in the United States by 2030, and the recently-passed $1 trillion infrastructure bill will play a key role in achieving that vision. EV adoption has been hindered by two main obstacles: the cost to consumers, and the woefully inadequate patchwork of charging networks in this country. For the former, tweaks to the current electric vehicle tax credit system are being debated in the US Senate right now. On the latter, the White House released a plan on Monday that calls for a new joint office from the Departments of Energy and Transportation that will be tasked with spending $7.5 billion to effectively quintuple the American public charger network to 500,000 stalls and develop a universal charging standard.

In a release from the White House on its EV Charging Action Plan, the Biden Administration declared the joint office will begin by meeting with stakeholders at every level, from state and local governments to automakers to labor unions to environmental groups. It will then take all that information and produce both federal standards for chargers and formalized guidance to states on how to best roll them out. Concurrently, the office will also work with car companies and charger manufacturers to ensure the industry is prepared to meet these demands while still prioritizing American-made components.

Lucid Motors CEO sees US$25,000 electric cars in 4 years, but they won’t be from Lucid Motors

Joann Muller / Axios »

Americans are warming up to the idea of electric cars, but the purchase price is still too high for many people, who also worry about how far their car will go before the battery needs recharging.

  • The $169,000 Lucid Air Dream, while financially out of reach for most people, has an unprecedented 520-mile driving range — efficiency that can be carried over to lower-priced models.
  • “The biggest challenge I’ve always faced was getting money, not going bankrupt, having that investment as a startup to develop this,” Rawlinson said, pointing to Lucid’s debut model.
  • “Start with this, but my passion: get this down from $169,000 to under $70,000 by the end of next year.”
  • “Efficiency’s the key, and our technology will drive down the (battery) pack size in this car. And driving the pack size will drive down the cost. And that’s where we get to a $25,000 car. And I think that could come three to four years from now.”

But it likely won’t be a $25,000 Lucid, Rawlinson also tells Axios. Instead, it will be other brands, selling high-volume models with smaller, cheaper battery packs based on Lucid’s efficiency breakthroughs.
