Hyundai IONIQ 5 named the 2022 ‘German Car of the Year’

Jürgen Keller, Managing Director Hyundai Motor Deutschland GmbH; Michael Cole, President & CEO Hyundai Motor Europe

Just half a year after its launch in the German market, Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 has been named 2022 ‘German Car of the Year’ (GCOTY). In the final round of the notable award, the fully-electric midsize CUV prevailed over its world-class competitors.

At the GCOTY awards, the top car model launches of the year compete against one another in five categories: “Compact”, “Premium”, “Luxury”, “New Energy”, and “Performance”. An internationally networked jury of 20 automotive journalists tests and evaluates each product in terms of product features, relevance, and future viability. As the class winner in the “New Energy” category, IONIQ 5 automatically took place – and consequently won – in the final round.

World’s first autonomous electric container ship launches in Oslo, Norway to replace 40K diesel truck trips per year

Andy Corbley / Good News Network »

Built by Yara to transport their mineral fertilizer stocks between the towns of Porsgrunn and Brevik, a trip which normally requires 40,000 trips by diesel truck per year, the Yara Birkeland will save around 1,000 tons of CO2 annually.

On November 19th, Yara Birkeland departed for a crewed maiden voyage—which included Norway’s prime minister—on a short 43-mile trip across the fjord from Horton to Oslo.

“We have been looking forward to this day for a long time,” stated Svein Tore Holsether, CEO of Yara. “This is an excellent example of green transition in practice, and we hope this ship will be the start of a new type of emission-free container ships. There are a lot of places in the world with congested roads that will benefit from a high-tech solution like this.”

Onboard the 262-foot (80 meter) vessel is a 6.8 megawatt-hours battery pack that can generate 17 mph (28 kph). It can carry 3,200 tons of fertilizer, and should begin commercial operations next year while it carries out lengthy certification for its autonomous navigation technology.

EV Trend » US about to charge up for an EV future

Matt Casale Director, Environment Campaigns, U.S. Public Interest Research Group »

Ten years ago, electric vehicles made up less than one quarter of one percent of total U.S. car sales. But after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, we’re on track to install thousands of electric vehicle charging stations across the country.

This will be the first-ever U.S. investment in electric vehicle charging stations. Let me repeat that. For the first time ever in American history, the federal government would be funding the necessary charging infrastructure that we need to transition away from gas-powered cars.

Here’s why this matters:

In the U.S., transportation is the greatest contributor to climate warming emissions, and the majority of those emissions come from everyday cars and trucks. Personal vehicles also emit toxic air pollution which harms our health. That’s why PIRG has been working for years to increase adoption of clean, emissions-free electric vehicles (EVs) by calling for 100% of car sales to be fully electric by 2035 (or sooner). To get there, we need to do three things: make electric vehicles cheaper and easier for people to buy, strengthen emission standards and build out infrastructure to support electric cars.

The bipartisan infrastructure package puts one of those key pieces of the puzzle into place.

Chinese EV maker Nio to expand into rapidly growing European market

NIO ES8

Nio recently opened a showroom in Norway dubbed Nio House as the first step in its expansion drive in the European Union. The CEO is taking a long term view of the rapidly expanding European market.

Nikkei 🔒 »

In Norway, one in every four customers who test-drove a Nio bought the car, a higher proportion than in China, according to Li. Nio will be “in at least five European markets [in addition to Norway] by the end of 2022,” he said.

Chinese automakers are struggling to gain traction overseas. They lack the strong global brands of their Western and Japanese counterparts. Nio is taking on powerhouses like Tesla and covets a slice of the luxury car market. It is seeking to become a household name in Europe while the big global carmakers continue to hedge their bets on electric vehicles.

EV sales are ballooning in Europe. In the July to September quarter, they made up 12.7% of total new car sales in 18 major European markets, more than double the figure for the same period last year, which came to 6.1%, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. The number of EVs sold during the period totalled 303,273, up 57% from a year earlier.
