2023 Fisker Ocean SUV unveiled at LA Auto Show

Fisker Ocean

Intended to be one of the most sustainable and innovative vehicles available, the Ocean features plenty of clever amenities, is made partly of recycled materials and even features a rotating infotainment screen.

The Ocean is about 6 inches longer than a Honda CR-V and it rolls on a wheelbase that’s about 10 inches greater, so it’s kind of a ‘tweener. The vehicle is built on a platform that was initially developed by Magna Steyr — a company with a long history of assembling vehicles for various automakers — but this foundation has been heavily modified by Fisker. According to Henrik Fisker, about 90% of it has been changed. Still, starting with an existing architecture saved an enormous amount of time, helping Fisker develop this vehicle in about two and a half years instead of the four or so it usually takes. Among other things, this means owners will get more advanced technology than is usually available in new cars because the lead time is significantly less.

One of this vehicle’s signature features is the Revolve infotainment display, which should have the highest resolution in the automotive industry. At 17.1 inches, it’s absolutely huge, but that’s not it’s neatest trick. This screen actually rotates on the dashboard, going from a portrait orientation to landscape, so-called Hollywood Mode. The former is intended for when you’re driving, while the latter allows you to watch movies or consume other content when parked.

2023 Nissan Ariya EV reservations open in the US, prices start at USD$47,125

CNET Roadshow »

The 2023 Nissan Ariya is coming, and on Tuesday, the automaker announced reservations are officially open for the SUV along with prices. The least expensive way into an Ariya will cost buyers $47,125 after a $1,175 destination charge, but the costs climb to just over $60,000 when optioning out a top-of-the-line model.

The trim breakdown for the Ariya is pretty simple with the Venture Plus trim serving as the base model, Ariya Evolve Plus as a midgrade option and the Platinum Plus as a range-topping version. For those that take part in the reservation process, there’s one special edition model available, too. That’s the Premiere trim, which won’t be sold at dealers when Nissan starts stocking them with the EV next year. Every trim except the Platinum Plus features an 87 kilowatt-hour battery with 238 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. EPA estimates aren’t in yet, but Nissan thinks it’ll do 300 miles on a charge. Front-wheel drive is the only option for these three trims.

Tesla amongst least reliable vehicles sold in United States

Joseph White / Reuters »

Consumer Reports, a nonprofit organization that evaluates products and services, said Tesla, the world’s most valuable automaker, ranked 27th out of 28 brands, just ahead of Ford Motor Co’s Lincoln brand.

Among electric SUVs, Fisher said Ford Motor Co‘s Mustang Mach-E “is the only one with above-average reliability.”

Consumer Reports recommends the Tesla Model 3 sedan and rates its reliability as “average.” But Fisher said the rest of Tesla’s vehicles are below average.

The popular Model Y SUV, Tesla’s best-selling vehicle, has problems with poorly fitting body panels, leaks and issues with its climate control, Fisher said.

Electric vehicles, with far fewer moving parts, should be more reliable than gas-powered vehicles, Fisher said. But electric SUVs tend to be higher-priced luxury vehicles at present, and those have all the latest technology that can cause trouble, he said.

“The powertrains aren’t the problem,” Fisher said. Instead, the electric SUVs often are equipped with electric door handles, electric-activated climate control vents and other features. “By having all of these new technologies saddled into these early adopter-mobiles, there are more problems associated with them.”

Fisher said electric vehicles are likely to be more reliable than gas-powered ones as manufacturers work the bugs out of their features.
