First deliveries of the Volvo FM Electric to DFDS will start in the fourth quarter of 2022 and continue throughout 2023. The trucks will be used for both short and long transport in the DFDS logistics system in Europe.

DFDS provides ferry and transport services in and around Europe. Its 10,000 employees are located across more than 20 countries. DFDS is headquartered in Copenhagen.

Niklas Andersson, Executive Vice President and Head of Logistics Division at DFDS, says »

At DFDS, we’re determined to play our part in reducing CO2 emissions and creating a sustainable supply chain. We know how important electrification is in the journey to reach our CO2 targets, and I hope we can inspire others as we move forward in this vital transition.

The FM Electric can carry 44 tons (gross weight) and has a range of up to 300 km. With a top-up charging session during lunch the distance can be extended.

The electrification trend in the heavy truck market is accelerating. In Europe, a few hundred trucks above 16 tons have been registered so far this year.

Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, says »

Our target for 2030 is that half of our global truck deliveries will be electric. We are pleased to see that growing interest among our customers is starting to be reflected in firm orders, not least by this impressive order from DFDS.

The plan is an early, but important, step in commercializing the automaker’s electric vehicle business, including a Hummer-based “electric Light Reconnaissance Vehicle,” or eLRV, for potential use by the Army, according to GM Defense President Steve duMont.

“The Army’s very excited about the fact that we’re investing in this,” he told CNBC during an interview at the automaker’s technology campus in Warren, Michigan. “The eLRV, that’s the first purpose built from the ground up, you saw it today, it’s our Hummer EV. Our Hummer EV is what we’re going to base that vehicle on.”

Following the imminent arrival of the iX flagship SUV and i4 saloon, BMW will launch a further seven electric cars by 2025, with several core ICE models gaining EV derivatives in the same vein as the X3-based iX3. Prior to these images of the new ‘i5’, we’ve seen battery-powered prototypes of the next-generation 7 Series, the current 3 Series and the next-generation X1 crossover.

BMW has yet to specifically detail how it will vary its EV powertrain offering, but the current 5 Series uses the same CLAR architecture that underpins the ICE and EV versions of the new 4 Series, suggesting that its larger sibling will offer a similar powertrain line-up if it retains the platform.

The most recent analysis shows carmakers planning to spend an estimated $515 billion over the next five to 10 years to develop and build new battery-powered vehicles and shift away from combustion engines.

But industry executives and forecasters remain concerned that consumer demand for EVs could fall well short of aggressive targets without substantial additional incentives and even greater spending on charging infrastructure and grid capacity.
